Silver Star Mountain Resort

in Beautiful British Columbia

Skiers' report from your man on the spot

An early washup from Silver Star for season 2018-2019
Most of British Columbia had the coldest February on record and the least snowfall for years. On the other hand we had a lot of sunshine! I really missed waking up each morning to 10cm of fresh champagne powder on top of the groomer outside our condo. We had no grade 5 piste days at all this season. But it was generally grade 3 or better, so not too shabby!

Heli-skiing was great, as usual. Going back to RK in Panorama again at the end of February 2020. In January and February I also plan to ski with Selkirk Tangiers Heli-skiing at Revelstoke. Revelstoke is just a 2 hour drive from our new home in Coldstream.

Now we are off to Les Menuires in France until the end of the season. Not too impressed by Geoff's reports of conditions there, but we live in hope of a good end to the ski season. And some warm weather!

Yeah !! Awesome
awesome
Thanks PlusNet
Easy !!
On-Piste conditions
The groomers are graded on a scale from 0 to 5.
Grade 0 is un-skiable.
Grade 5 is as good as it gets - 10cm+ of fresh on a groomed base.
Off-Piste conditions
Grade 0 is un-skiable.
Grade 5 is deep and soft, go anywhere snow.
Grade 6 is reserved for champagne powder, frequently found
in the forests of eastern British Columbia. Dream on .......
Today's Weather
Grade 0 is stay indoors weather.
Grade 5 is clear, cool, blue sky, sunshine. Perfect.
Was it crowded today?
Grade 0 is horribly crowded.
Grade 5 is deserted, say bonjour to anyone you meet.
Temperature in °C at around 09:00
either at the RK Heliski Heliplex at 1200m in Panorama
or, in Silver Star village at 1600m.
Depth
The snow depth in metres
either at the top of Silver Star (1915m)
or at the top of Panorama (2365m)
or in the Purcell Range at around 3000m.
New snow
The amount of snow in centimetres that fell YESTERDAY or LAST NIGHT.
Avalanche risk
On a scale 1-5.
The most dangerous is grade 5 - spontaneous avalanches on any slope possible.
Cumulative
The amount of snow in centimetres that has fallen so far this season.
This is more applicable at Silver Star as the snow accumulates steadily rather than in big dumps, as in the Alps.
Feet
Vertical feet skied this day.
Calculated from the official height gain of the lifts I have taken a ride on.
Think about it. I don't buy an expensive season ticket and then walk uphill.
Quality of the skiing experience from    cyan_5 Awesome    to    cyan_1 'Orrible
Very subjective this one, I am very picky about my skiing conditions.
There might be only ½ hour of perfect conditions.
But that ½ hour makes it a perfect day, grade 5 - AWESOME.
Thermometer calibration
At least, the zero reading has been checked!
In melting icy water, my $5 thermometer reads +2°C.
SO - subtract 2° from whatever it reads.
My 14th consecutive skiing and heli-skiing trip to Beautiful British Columbia, December to March 2019

Silver Star - Our last day here this season, Les Menuires next stop. A final cruise around the groomers in bright sunshine on excellent grade 4 piste. Off-piste is still fluffy but well skied out. Very quiet, though we did see a few other skiers on the Backside.

Silver Star - Bootiful weather and hill deserted, had the gondola to ourselves. Excellent snow on the gentle runs. We are going to find it tough skiing in France. Skiing with Andrew and Nate (on the reins).

Silver Star - Misty morning so straight home again. Same in afternoon! Our condo was the only sunny spot. Lots more people skiing. On a Friday ???? Home for the weekend, back next week.
28/02/2019 4 2 2 5 -8 2.09 6 1 537 6,506 grey_3
Silver Star - Started to snow at 08:00 and continued all day. Big improvement to gentle angle groomers by early afternoon.
27/02/2019 4 2 3 5 -8 2.05 1 1 532 6,506 grey_3
Silver Star - My thighs ached after yesterday's snow plowing, so a gentle punt around until the sun disappeared. Only easy groomers still grade 4. Anything steeper is scraped smooth.
26/02/2019 4 2 5 5 -16 2.08 1 1 531 10,279 grey_3
Silver Star - Chilly cruising the blues early morning. But had the place to myself. Onto the greens later with Nate (on the reins) and Andrew. Nate can go straight down but hasn't got the hang of turning or stopping. He will be 4 in 1 month.
25/02/2019 4 2 4 5 -12 2.10 2 1 529 8,356 grey_3
Silver Star - Very quiet again after last week's President's Day holiday. Bit cloudy in Vance Creek at first but that burnt off to a blue sky. Cruising the blues with Maggie. Most impressed how she has recovered from her new hip operation. Maggie insisted that the groomers were just grade 4, says I am getting much too picky. Our last week at Silver Star this season.

RK Heli-Ski - Excellent last day skiing in Jumbo Creek with a good Danish group. Complete contrast to yesterday, tree skiing in the morning then onto Big Judy for 3 runs in the afternoon. Best powder (so far) this season, though not quite the champagne variety. 6 runs with Jeremy.
14/02/2019 4 5 5 5 -23 2.10 0 3 395 15,000 grey_4
RK Heli-Ski - An excellent, easy, bluebird, alpine day up on Farnham Glacier. 5 long runs with Nate. Maggie reported the groomers in excellent condition and did a max vertical so far this season.
13/02/2019 4 5 3 4 -12 1.34 7 3 395 0 grey_0
Panorama - A scheduled rest day for me. Maggie reported the new snow is nice but slightly heavy on the groomers.
12/02/2019 3 5 2 5 -15 1.70 12 3 389 14,000 grey_4
RK Heli-Ski - Complete contrast to yesterday. Cloudy and snowing so we skied mostly in the Jumbo Creek trees or just above. Mostly excellent snow, deep and fluffy. 6 runs with Rod.
11/02/2019 3 3 4 5 -22 2.00 2 3 389 14,000 grey_3
RK Heli-Ski - Beautiful bluebird day with no wind. Everybody over-dressed as the sun was warm. Snow was challenging with a buried crust. 6 runs with Mike in the high bowls.

Panorama - The Arctic Inflow is very apparent. Cold and sunny. Maggie reported the groomers have improved since the last visit. Sun Bowl excellent.
07/02/2019 3 1 3 5 -12 1.71 3 1 430 6,506 grey_3
Silver Star - Not so cold as some snow arrives. But still hardly anybody skiing. BackSide open, operatives look frozen! Down to Coldstream tonight, off to Panorama tomorrow.
06/02/2019 3 1 4 5 -22 1.71 3 1 430 1,850 grey_3
Silver Star - An Arctic Inflow. IT is COLD. Too cold to sit on chairlifts. But beautiful bluebird day to walk the forest trails. Car block heater plugged in. Groomers very firm. Not many people skiing. BackSide closed due to cold.
01/02/2019 4 1 2 4 -2 1.71 2 1 414 6,506 grey_3
Silver Star - Groomers firm and smooth with a light dusting on top. Trees still green, where is the usual snowfall? Then down to Coldstream for the weekend.
31/01/2019 3 1 2 5 -2 1.70 1 1 411 5,509 grey_3
Silver Star - Grey and un-inviting at 08:00, so a long lie. Cloudy but not snowing so just a very average outing pm. Bit of snow forecast tonight then 10°C colder next week.
30/01/2019 3 1 3 5 -3 1.71 1 1 410 4,419 grey_3
Silver Star - Bright afternoon but we managed to go out skiing in the one dull hour!! And fled back to the hot tub. Very quiet. Snow surprisingly good but missing the powder already. Left hip and leg constantly painful for no apparent reason, so booked to see our local chiropractor next Monday.
25/01/2019 3 5 2 5 -8 2.10 5 4 330 13,000 grey_4
RK Heli-Ski - Cloudy in the mountains again, so 6 runs with Rod in Jumbo Creek. Not champagne powder everywhere, but still grade 5. We set off a few slab snow slides, particularly on Big Judy and on the steep parts of Rod's Run.
24/01/2019 3 5 3 5 -12 2.10 5 3 330 14,000 grey_4
RK Heli-Ski - The cloud never cleared enough to get into the alpine proper, but the bowls below 2,500m and trees had excellent snow and it was quite bright. 6 runs with Rod and a good team of just 7 plus Team Italia later on.
23/01/2019 3 5 4 5 -14 2.10 10 3 330 0 grey_0
Panorama - Planned rest day for me. RK skied on Farnham Glacier!! Maggie reports Pano pistes pretty hard but sunny.
22/01/2019 3 5 2 5 -14 2.50 2 3 330 12,000 grey_4
RK Heli-Ski - Overcast with flurries so skiing open bowls and trees. Golden Bowl, Millenium then in Jumbo Creek. Localised avalanche risk and some wind crust in places. 5 runs with Scott and Cyril. Left hip hurting a lot, but not when skiing!
21/01/2019 3 5 5 5 -14 2.50 0 3 330 15,000 grey_5
RK Heli-Ski - Awesome first day heli-skiing. Perfect blue sky, no wind and -17°C on arrival at 2,900m above The Cauldron. 15cm of powder on smooth base. 5 easy 1,000m vertical blue runs with Graham and Cyril.
20/01/2019 3 1 4 4 -2 1.11 2 1 330 0 grey_3
Panorama - Maggie reported the groomers firm to hard compared to Silver Star on account of the artificial snow. Better over in the Sun Bowl. Rest day for me. Second computer hinge removed and so problem fixed. Unlike Brexit.
17/01/2019 4 1 2 5 -2 1.62 2 1 368 8,346 grey_4
Silver Star - SNOWING. Transformed the groomers. Excellent morning ski then down to Coldstream to get ready to drive over to Golden tomorrow. The second hinge on this laptop has broken, so could be end of reports. Unless .........

Silver Star - Overcast with flurries. Groomers still good on top half of mountain. Watched the no-confidence vote over 11am coffee.
15/01/2019 3 1 5 4 -4 1.63 1 1 366 12,936 grey_3
Silver Star - Beautiful bluebird day above a sea of cloud in the valleys. Smooth soft corduroy on top half, harder lower down. Stuart flies home today. Watched Brexit vote live over morning coffee. CHAOS REIGNS !! Let the people decide with a 3-way vote.
11/01/2019 4 2 3 4 -3 1.69 1 1 361 11,765 grey_3
Silver Star - Bright morning and smooth corduroy over in Putnam Creek. Went out again later but the vis. was poor. Then down to Coldstream for the weekend.
10/01/2019 4 2 4 4 -1 1.72 0 1 360 12,766 grey_3
Silver Star - Warmer still, snow falling off trees below 1600m. But sunny, BX Express in the sunshine this morning was excellent.
09/01/2019 4 3 2 4 -4 1.76 10 1 360 13,012 grey_4
Silver Star - Not cold enough, snow a bit humid, not champagne powder yet. Stuart out skiing with Maggie today. OUR SHIPMENT ARRIVED. Great relief, we have clean socks to put on after 4 months of living out of a suitcase.
03/01/2019 3 1 2 4 -3 1.53 3 1 317 1850 grey_3
Silver Star - Not great skiing conditions but great news - customs want us to clear our shipment tomorrow in Kelowna for delivery soon afterwards. Skiing abandoned! Stuart arrived in Coldstream yesterday (2nd). Happy New Year.
24/12/2018 3 2 2 4 -7 1.41 1 1 272 846 grey_3
Silver Star - Nate skiing for the first time this season with grand-dad leading the way and dad holding the reins. Nate was more interested in what was going on all around him than in the skiing, the way 3¾ year olds are.
21/12/2018 4 2 4 5 -8 1.45 13 1   11,148 grey_4
Silver Star - It snowed last night, the wind died down and the sun came out. Excellent. Eldorado, Calibre Ridge and Gypsy Queen. Then had to move out of condo for rentals over Christmas/New Year to pay our annual costs.
20/12/2018 3 1 2 5 -2 1.35 8 1   1,243 grey_2
Silver Star - Gloomy, windiest I have seen it at Silver Star, with spindrift. Felt too warm. Out and back-in day. Sun came out as lifts closed! Calibrated thermometer - it reads nearly +2°C too high. So adjusted all morning temperatures. Now correct ±0.5°C.
19/12/2018 3 1 3 5 -2 1.30 1 1   12,011 grey_3
Silver Star - Firm corduroy, soft at the top, harder lower down. Over to the Back Side at last. Cruised Eldorado and Gypsy Queen. Very, very quiet this pre-Christmas week.
18/12/2018 2 1 3 5 -2 1.32 5 1   1,850 grey_3
Silver Star - Still much too warm. Wet snow falling and breezy, no sign of the champagne powder yet.
14/12/2018 3 1 3 5 -3 1.22 1 1   2,851 grey_3
Silver Star - Bit too warm, high overcast and no fresh snow. Not very inspiring so off home for the weekend.
13/12/2018 3 1 2 5 -3 1.24 1 1   282 grey_2
Silver Star - Out and straight home. Warm with pea soup fog and no fresh snow. Back Side will open Saturday.
12/12/2018 4 1 3 5 -8 1.23 12 1   10,801 grey_4
Silver Star - A sunny start with 10cm of fresh snow on the groomers, as we have come to expect here. Cloud rolled in later. Back Side still not open.
07/12/2018 3 1 5 5 -12 1.03 2 1   5,341 grey_3
Silver Star - Another beautiful bluebird day with twinklies in the air. Just a morning run before some retail therapy at Canadian Tire.
06/12/2018 3 1 5 5 -12 1.06 2 1   11,155 grey_3
Silver Star - A beautiful bluebird day. Silver Woods opened today, so that is all of the Front Side now operating. The Back Side may open this weekend.
05/12/2018 3 1 3 5 -11 1.04 2 1   4,055 grey_3
Silver Star - A gentle ski for Maggie with her repaired shoulder and new hip on beautiful snow on the green and blue runs of the top half of the Front Side.
